Reaction Review #5: Scripts

1.DD Drop Down Panel

Author:Dynamic Drive

This script allows the user to dynamically expand and hide content based on clicks.  It allows for a site to look cleaner as well as feel more interactive to the user.

IE: This script could be very useful on a portfolio site home page when needing to break up links into categories.   You may have an about section, a blog, ect., but you              don’t a single portfolio link. You have a print, web, multimedia section, ect.  So you could make thinks categories show up under one single portfolio drop down.

2.News Bar script

Author:Premshree Pillai

The script allows the user to create a news feed bar through the use of buttons

IE: This script could be useful if the site wants or has pressing information they want to share or highlight

Reaction Review #4 : Portfolio Site Review : SJ

http://www.shaunjarvis.com/

Shaun Jarvis is a Portland locally grown photographer, who  now lives and works in New York.

Navigation:

While the navigation isn’t nessacarely the most straight forward approach to a website, it looks really clean and has some really nice touches.  The site is flash based.  It is broken into three categories including galleries, projects, and contact.  Galleries breaks up into sub-categories when clicked, and shows large fields of thumbnails that can be clicked on.  These images will open up in a new window.  Overall the navigation is pretty slick and works quite well.

Portfolio:

The portfolio is broken up into sub categories including portraiture, commercial, and polaroids.  This allows the site to separate his fine art work from his client work.

Flash:

Flash is really what makes this site what it is.  Flash really takes this site to the next level.  It livens it up, gives it an extra sense of integration and professionalism.

Reaction Review #3: Interactionism

SNA_segmentInteractionism is the theory that symbols, meanings, social structures and the self, are all created and adapt through the interactions individuals have in society.  Through actions, and reactions, a certain mutual adaptation is able to occur.  It is because of this process that an individual is just a capable as changing a society as a society is of changing an individual.

An Interactionist studies these relationships, and gathers qualitative informations regarding these communications between individuals.  With a greater knowledge of how individuals react to certain situations and stimuli, we are able to then design smarter to control what actions we want the consumer to make.

Theories related to Interactionsim include Neo-Marxism, and Pluralism.  Pluralism specifically deals with the notion that “the public gets what the public wants“₁

Dreamweaver vs. WordPress

Dreamweaver and WordPress are two commonly used web builders.  Both builders do a great deal of the grunt work for you. One created by Adobe is an expansive tool and usually is  purchased in the creative suite with Photoshop and Illustrator.  Wordpress is an online server that functions somewhat like a peer to peer network similar to PNCA’s HomeRoom.  Wordpress is free which is quite a nice perk. Like HomeRoom, with a WordPress account you can add contacts, posts, images links, etc. You are able to categorize them in which ever way you deem cohesive.  While WordPress functions more like a blog under a wordpress domain, dreamweaver helps u build sites offline to upload to whatever domain u want online.  This comes at a pretty penny though.  While both builders help u create a web presence, they function quite differently and should be used for specific needs.  Wordpress is simpler and user friendly for someone who may not understand  or find the need for complicated software.

Wireframes

Wireframes are basic architectural diagrams for the layout of a website.  Wireframes can be the layout for any type of design work.  They are basic forms for the concept of the design.

Wireframes allow designers and viewers to focus on the form of the website at its most basic level.  Is it working? Is the site organized properly?  These are the types of questions that can be focused on, and answered when working with wireframes.

The cons of using wireframes are that the viewer doesn’t receive any graphic content.  But then again, is that really a con? Graphic content can be added later.  The only problem i foresee in not having graphic content, is explaining the end goal or product to the consumer/client.
